How to choose a transformer: dry-type transformers and oil-immersed power transformers
A transformer is a commonly used and efficient facility that immediately takes high voltage from a power plant and converts it to a lower operating voltage. In this way, low-voltage mechanical equipment can be safely and reasonably applied and solved in indoor spaces such as company offices, hub stations, universities, and factories, saving energy.
Depending on the entire process, power transformers generate a lot of heat that must be released to maintain safe operation. Currently, there are two types of transformers in industrial production: dry-type transformers and oil-immersed power transformers. Dry air is used as cooling medium and liquid refrigeration is used as oil. While the end result of both classes is the same, it's important to note that there are many differences between them that can jeopardize the type you choose.
Maintenance: Oil immersed power transformers must have extensive maintenance log sheets and must be performed more frequently than dry. Oil must be sampled with contaminants, and dry-type transformers are highly resistant to organic chemical contaminants.
Cost (original and running): Dry-type transformers have significantly higher running costs compared to oil-immersed. Oil-immersed transformers have stronger standard energy consumption levels and longer service life than dry-type transformers.
Noise: Oil-immersed toroidal transformers work at low noise levels, with less noise pollution than dry noise.
Recyclability: Dry recycling has a limited full life cycle, while rock/oil rolls from oil plants are easier to recycle. Oil immersed power transformers have good life and expandability, resulting in less waste and less need for replacement and work.
High Efficiency: A dry-type transformer is a device with limited current and size. If they carry the load, they may overheat. The conclusion is that they have strong power losses and dry output power is more expensive over time. Cold oil generator sets are smaller and more efficient. It is less and less demanding and has less and less traces of the natural environment.
Operating Voltage and Capability: Dry-type transformers are designed to solve large, medium and small MVA as well as rated current, making them ideal for small to medium applications. Oil immersed toroidal transformers can handle heavier loads and therefore require steam modules to apply higher voltages.
Location: The location of the transformer will be the biggest determining factor in the type you need. Dry trial designs are used in and around buildings simply because they are safer for the natural environment. Dry-type transformers are flammable and have low fire risk, and are especially suitable for commercial service areas such as large shopping centers, hospital clinics, and residential areas. Oil-immersed toroidal transformers are used for outdoor assembly and can cause fires, but such machines and equipment are more environmentally friendly.
